Wednesday, April 1, 2026-The French Senate has passed a measure that would prohibit children under the age of 15 from accessing social media platforms.

Lawmakers cited concerns over mental health, online safety, and exposure to inappropriate content as key reasons for the move. The legislation aims to compel social media companies to verify users’ ages and prevent younger users from creating accounts.

The law is part of a broader European push to regulate digital spaces for minors, reflecting rising concerns about cyberbullying, screen addiction, and the psychological impact of social media on adolescents. French authorities have stressed that the ban is intended to protect children while still allowing supervised, educational online use.

The legislation now moves to the National Assembly for further debate. Critics argue that enforcing such a ban may be technically challenging and could push younger users toward unregulated platforms or circumvent age restrictions, but supporters maintain that clear legal limits are necessary to safeguard the well-being of minors.
