Wednesday, April 1, 2026-Spain has officially closed its airspace to U.S. military aircraft participating in the conflict with Iran.
The move also expands an earlier ban that prevented U.S. use of Spanish military bases for war-related operations, forcing U.S. warplanes to detour around Spain unless in emergency situations.
Madrid’s stance reflects strong opposition from Spanish leadership to the war. Defence Minister Margarita Robles stated that the government is refusing both base access and airspace participation for actions linked to the conflict, emphasizing Spain’s intent not to contribute to what leaders describe as a unilateral and unlawful war.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized the military campaign as reckless and illegal, reinforcing that Spain will not be a logistical partner in operations against Iran.
The decision has heightened diplomatic tension with Washington. U.S. officials have warned of potential repercussions, but reiterated that operations can continue without Spanish support.
Spain’s airspace ban highlights growing fractures within NATO over the Iran conflict and signals Madrid’s willingness to assert sovereignty and legal objections despite alliance pressures.
