Drama as suspects abandon a Mazda CX-5 loaded with bhang worth Ksh 13.5 Million after being intercepted by detectives and flee on foot (PHOTOs)

Friday, July 24, 2026 - Detectives have intercepted a Mazda CX-5 loaded with bh@ng worth approximately Ksh13.5 million after the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot during an intelligence-led operation in Nandi County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers from Kaimosi Police Station acted on a tip-off and laid an ambush along the Chavakali-Kapsabet Road for a sky-blue Mazda CX-5 suspected of transporting narcotics.

The operation led to the interception of the SUV, where officers recovered seven sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 271.3 kilogrammes with an estimated street value of about Ksh13.4 million.

However, the driver and his accomplice managed to escape, abandoning both the vehicle and the illicit cargo at the scene.

In a separate operation at Ngariga Junction along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Kiambu County, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) intercepted a public service vehicle and arrested a 32-year-old passenger, Francis Oteba, after he was found with five bales of bhang concealed inside a black bag.

Meanwhile, in Kisii County, ANU detectives arrested Nancy Moraa, Phylis Matundura Mogaka and Andrew Makokha Cheng'oli after they were allegedly found in possession of 10 kilogrammes of bhang and Ksh63,335 suspected to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade.

The DCI said the coordinated operations underscore the agency's commitment to dismantling narcotics trafficking networks and disrupting the illegal drug trade across the country.
