Vocal UDA MP claims KALONZO asked RUTO to make him Senate Speaker after 2022 elections and alleges Opposition leaders are secretly working with RUTO ahead of 2027 elections

Tuesday, September 15, 2026 - Outspoken Belgut MP Nelson Koech has alleged that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka reached out to President William Ruto seeking to be appointed Speaker of the Senate shortly after the 2022 General Election.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 15, Koech claimed Kalonzo made the approach in the aftermath of the closely contested presidential race.

“Kalonzo once reached out to the president requesting to be the Speaker of the Senate. This was immediately after the last general election (2022),” he said.

Koech made the remarks while assessing the country’s political landscape and the opposition’s prospects ahead of the 2027 polls.

A close confidant of the President, Koech expressed confidence that Ruto would easily be re-elected in 2027, arguing that divisions within the opposition would play to the President’s advantage.

“I see no one beating William Ruto. Wait and see the split in the opposition.

“All these guys will never agree because all of them are currently negotiating for positions in government,” he added.

His comments come days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua signaled his willingness to serve as running mate to Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Sunday, September 6, in Washington, USA, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the united opposition is open to different leadership combinations ahead of next year’s polls.

“There is no problem; even I, Riggy G, can deputize Sifuna. Is there anything wrong with that? Even Sifuna can deputize me.

“Sifuna can deputize Kalonzo or Kalonzo can deputize Sifuna,” Gachagua remarked.

At the same time, Gachagua encouraged Sifuna to pursue the presidency without fear of political opponents, promising support if he convinces the coalition of his suitability.

“I have told my younger brother Edwin Sifuna not to be discouraged by anybody; go for it.

“If you persuade us that you are the best person to take William Ruto home, we will give you the flag bearer position,” he added.
